Calico Jack Review

Diving Squad Rating:

9.2/10

9.2 / 10

Calico Jack has only 5 cabins, making her a great choice for anyone in search of a more private experience.

This is also an extremely good liveaboard for non-divers, as there are many extra activities featured throughout the various itineraries, plus extra onboard amenities.

Great For: Small Groups, Non-Divers, Intimate Experience, Couples

Trip Lengths: 9 – 12 days.

Max Guest Capacity: 10

Details:

Calico Jack runs a range of superb itineraries, which unlike some other liveaboards; are not limited to just one part of Raja Ampat.

In my opinion, the best of these is the 12 day “Raja Ampat (Sorong Sorong)” trip as it explores Raja Ampat in it’s fully entirety, covering the central, south and northern regions.

Because dive safaris are planned in response to weather conditions, seasonal activity of animals and diver’s preferences, no two cruises are ever exactly the same!

The friendly and knowledgeable crew really do go out of their way with selecting dive sites that offer guests the best possible experience.

There’s also many extra activities such as kayaking, stand up paddle-boarding, a beach bbq, village visits, lagoon exploration and massage treatment!

Plus, guests have free access to snorkelling gear, fishing equipment and internet.

Calico Jack is an extremely handsome, traditionally built Phinisi vessel with a stunning wooden interior. In between dives and other activities, guests can relax on the leisure deck and take in the awesome panoramic views.

There’s also an extremely spacious outside dining area that offers yet more great views which can be enjoyed whilst whilst tucking into the delicious asian-fusion cuisine.

Heading inside to the air conditioned indoor lounge, there’s plenty of seating space from which to enjoy the TV & DVD player as well as a computer system.

Underwater photographers will appreciate the camera and photography stations, plus special storage for underwater camera setups.

Cabins are very spacious and feature air conditioning & ensuite bathrooms with double rooms also featuring ocean view portholes.

Personally, I think Calico Jack is a fantastic all-rounder! She takes the second smallest group size of any Raja Ampat liveaboard (max group size of 10, second only to Carpe Diem’s groups size of 8).

Calico Jack also offers more activities than most other options, with the exception of Ambai, where it’s also possible to water ski (although group sizes on Ambai are bigger).

Also, Calico Jack is a little cheaper than other options including Ambai and Carpe Diem!

The overall feel of the boat, crew and pace of each itinerary is laid back and intimate. With a small group size, more care can be placed into each individual guests enjoyment :).

"Many thanks to Julie and the crew for making this such a memorable trip. The diving was superb and the food was great. Despite the professional approach to work, the crew make the boat feel like a happy family".

".The trip was perfect. The crew was very nice and helpful at every moment. The cabins are small but comfortable. There's a lot of space for the clients on the boat, that it's only for ten people, so you can enjoy a friendly and peaceful atmosphere. The divesites are beautiful and the dive operation is perfect. Five divers with two guides who take care of you. The food was really good and varied. We spent eight great nights there and it was an unforgettable experience".

“The diving spots, especially in the south in the now catch zones were wonderful, huge fish swarms and the most beautiful coral reefs, unharmed by global warming. The food was delicious, we enjoyed eating, sitting and talking together on the large table.

Special thanks to the manager on the boat, to Julie for the perfect organisation and the love to any detail, to the whole very friendly crew, including captain, diving instructors, technician, cook and service staff and last not least to Sam, whose love to chess gave me personally a perfect round-up for the evenings.

Worth mentioning also the effort the team did for the barbecue evening on the beach for an unforgettable experience! Highly recommended”!
